Match 1: Deuce & Domino (w/Cherry) vs. Dave Taylor & Drew McIntyre vs. Jimmy Wang Yang & Shannon Moore vs. the Major Brothers vs. Jesse & Festus (tag team battle royal--winners to face Matt Hardy & MVP later in the show) The depth---such as it is---of Smackdown's tag team division is showcased in tonight's opening match. Understandably, Festus, the biggest man in the match, is the first one to go, as the other four teams gang up on him to send him over the top. Before the break, Taylor eliminated Yang. When one half of the team is eliminated, the other half automatically comes out of the match. Taylor is in turn eliminated by the Majors, so now it's down to the Majors and Deuce & Domino. The former champions seem to have the match in hand after a double team suplex on Brett. However, they waste too much time playing to the crowd, and it costs them. Brett is whipped into the ropes, but holds on and low-bridges Deuce & Domino out of the ring! Winners: The Major Brothers. The Majors now have to regroup to face MVP & Matt Hardy later, but have they used up too much energy already? Backstage, Torrie Wilson & Michelle McCool are talking, and Torrie puts Michelle on the spot. Are Michelle & Chuck Palumbo an item? No, says Michelle, they're just friends, even though she rides on the back of Chuck's bike every week. And along comes Chuck, who all but puts a headlock on Michelle. Kenny "0-for-Smackdown" Dykstra and Victoria show up, and the next thing you know, a mini-catfight breaks out that the guys have to break up. The latest chapter in the Michelle-Victoria feud is next.
Match 2: Michelle McCool (w/Chuck Palumbo) vs. Victoria (w/Kenny Dykstra) How often are these two ladies going to be matched against each other? There would've been a fourth for bridge, but Krissy Vaine decided to leave before really getting her feet wet. I digress. Standard stuff from these two, both sporting new outfits. Michelle has the advantage after a kick to the chest area, but Kenny pulls his lady out of the ring before Michelle can continue. Palumbo comes charging to clear the decks. However, as Michelle follows Vic back into the ring, she's met with a DDT and pinned. Winner: Victoria. Anatasia interviews Rey Mysterio, who faces Finlay tonight. Rey disputes the Fighting Irishman's claims of him being a "loser", and says he was trained to win.
ECW champion CM Punk is visiting Smackdown and meets with Vicki Guerrero. Jamie Noble shows up with a cobbled together highlight tape. Punk refers to this as a "retro VHS". Funny. He thinks Noble's awesome, but Jamie goes berserk and accuses the interim GM of being crazy. Pot, say hello to the kettle. Vicki puts the two in a singles match later. Noble is still going nuts.
Match 3: Rey Mysterio vs. Finlay Easily the match of the night, packed with so much action and emotion. Finlay was the aggressor for much of the bout, keeping Rey grounded by employing brawling tactics, and even attempting to force a submission with a Boston crab. However, Rey continued to battle, and ultimately hit the 619. He went upstairs, but Finlay hit the ropes and knocked Mysterio off. One Celtic Cross later, and it's over. Winner: Finlay. Post-match, the Fighting Irishman continued the assault on Mysterio, such that ref Jim Corderas could've decided to reverse the decision, but he didn't. His loss.
Match 4: CM Punk vs. Jamie Noble (non-title) I am not sure if Noble and Punk ever crossed paths when Noble (as James Gibson) was in Ring of Honor a couple of years back. Punk might've already been gone from ROH by then, I don't know. Anyway, the seeds have been planted for these two to meet again. Pretty good match, with Noble hanging right in with the ECW champion. However, he relaxes at the wrong time, and that allows Punk to make his move. Just when it looks like Punk will clinch it with Go To Sleep, Mike Mizanin shows up and engages the champion. Ref calls for the bell. Miz is easily thrashed. John Morrison ambushes Punk, but eats a GTS. Noble comes back and lays out Punk with the deluxe gutbuster. Hmmmm. Politically motivated, anyone? Winner: CM Punk via DQ.
Time now to walk through the pit of danger with the World champion, Dave Batista. Convienently, JBL pulls out his cellphone and leaves the desk to take a call. Considering what he did to Batista and Undertaker last week, he was likely afraid of reprisals. However, Batista's focus is strictly on Undertaker. He admits they're not friends and do not like each other, but he's pulling for UT tonight in a no holds barred match vs. Great Khali. Batista wants Undertaker at 100% for hell in a cell at Survivor Series, where he's putting everything on the line. He kept it short, intense, and to the point.
Match 5: MVP & Matt Hardy vs. the Major Brothers (WWE tag team titles) Squashola! Just before the match starts, JBL insincerely apologizes for leaving the desk, and makes lame excuses. Unfortunately, just as the bout begins, the audio feed cuts out. Don't know if that's a national or local problem. Brian Major was in the entire match, and was treated like a rent-a-jobber. Matt started it, and hit the bulldog and side effect. Went for the Twist of Fate, but Porter's ego got in the way and he tagged himself in to finish the job. A kick to the head sent Brett to the floor, and Porter finished off Brian with the Playmaker. Winners: MVP & Matt Hardy. Dissension is forming again with the tag champs, all because of Porter's selfishness. Considering that they're on opposing teams at Survivor Series, with Matt joining brother Jeff and Triple H for the 2nd year in a row, plus Kane & Rey Mysterio vs. MVP, Finlay, Kennedy, Umaga, & Big Daddy V. Throughout the show, we've seen clips of some of Great Khali's "greatest hits", leading up to his match with Undertaker. Lock this in the vault, people, because it may be all the "hits" Khali has.
JBL & Cole run down the Survivor Series card. Hornswoggle is listed as being 4', 4" and 115 pounds, easily the lightest male athlete on the roster. The audio problem is a local issue. The localized commercials have also been affected.
Match 6: Undertaker vs. Great Khali (w/Runjin Singh)(no holds barred) They never left the ring to take advantage of the stipulation. Taker hit a chokeslam early. Singh got on the apron, jumping up and down like a child, but Khali kicked out anyway. Taker glared and Singh dropped back to the floor, never to be heard from again. Back and forth they went. Khali applied the vise grip, but couldn't finish off the Deadman. A 2nd chokeslam netted another near fall. Taker went for the tombstone, but Khali answered with a tree slam. At this point, the audio feed is back on. The techs at the affiliate finally figured out what was wrong. Khali posed for the crowd, and that was a fatal mistake. UT sat up and applied a triangle choke. Once it was locked around the head of Khali, the Punjabi giant tapped out. Winner: Undertaker. The Deadman posed for the crowd after motioning he wanted the World title. End of show.
