We open with Teddy Long, who announces that Batista will
have his rematch vs. Undertaker for the World title. It'll
be a Last Man Standing match at Backlash. Now, with apologies
to Staples, that was easy.
Mr. Kennedy vs. Finlay & Hornswoggle. Kennedy's
had time to think this out, and decides to man up and apologize
for what he did at Wrestlemania to Hornswoggle. Finlay accepts,
but warns Kennedy about attacking the leprechaun again.
Aside from 'Swoggle sticking his arm out to greet Finlay,
we don't see him at all. Kennedy got a face reaction, but
got the heel heat back by making the apology and having
the match cancelled. Long comes back out and puts the two
together as a tag team for later-----vs. Batista & Undertaker.
Winner: None. There was no match.
Amazingly, JBL didn't make any correlation between Kennedy's
apology and that of disgraced radio personality Don Imus.
Had this been on Raw, Jerry Lawler would've said something.
Backstage, Michelle McCool is being having her outfit adjusted
when she hears a commotion. Michelle rushes into the women's
locker room to find Jillian Hall attacking Ashley Massaro,
all because she won't be appearing in Timbaland's music
video. Paul London & Brian Kendrick have heard the commotion,
too, and are checking on their manager. Well, they needed
another face diva on Smackdown, and Michelle is it, it seems,
even though she was on the heel side two weeks ago in a
tag match.
Paul London & Brian Kendrick (w/o Ashley) vs.
Deuce & Domino (w/Cherry)(WWE tag titles).
Return match from No Way Out. Pretty evenly paced contest,
back and forth from the get-go. The challengers did all
they could do to ground Kendrick and isolate him, but never
considered putting him away. He makes the hot tag to London,
and the pace quickens. Deuce, however, makes a critical
tactical error. Domino has London set up for the Crack in
the Mouth, the running kick to the head, but ref Mickey
Henson is trying to get Deuce, the illegal man, out of the
ring. Deuce ignores the 5 count and hits the Crack anyway.
Henson calls for the bell. Deuce & Domino are hot. Cherry
shows no emotion, but that's another story. Winners: Paul
London & Brian Kendrick via DQ.Back from break, Teddy
is telling Kristal about a special surprise he has lined
up for her next week while they're in Italy for the 400th
episode of Smackdown. I hope it's not what I think it is,
but Teddy's making hints in that direction. Deuce &
Domino & Cherry burst in. Teddy scolds them for ignoring
the ref's count and advises that they abide by the rules.
Hmmm.
Chris Benoit vs. Montel V. Porter (non-title).
Return from Wrestlemania, and the best match on the show.
What we're seeing here, folks, is the maturation of Montel
Porter. Yes, they've booked him backwards since coming in,
and his gimmick has all the shelf life of a sheet of onionskin
paper, but the man can go. They needed this kid to step
up big time, and he hit a home run. Benoit hit the rolling
Germans, and set up for the headbutt off the top, but Porter
wasn't about to fall victim to that twice in a row, and
got out of Dodge. Porter rolled up Benoit and grabbed the
ropes---needlessly, of course---to get the win back, setting
up a rematch for the US title, either next week or at Backlash.
Winner: MVP.
Post-match, Porter is interviewed by Kristal, and ruins
the moment. The match was great up until the lame, stale
finish.
Kane vs. Daivari. Daivari has shaved his
head since we saw him last. Now, what could've possessed
him to do that? Here's another question. How do you say,
"total squash" in Farsi? Because that's what this
is. Winner: Kane.
Post-match, William Regal & David Taylor, who were soundly
thrashed by Kane last week, come seeking a receipt in the
form of an ambush. They couldn't put Big Red down, so they
flee. I think the British Bruisers will be getting a visit
from the Brothers of Destruction real soon.
We're told that King Booker suffered a neck injury (worked),
and had surgery on that as well as knee & elbow injuries
and is "out indefinitely". We can say goodbye
to the King gimmick, thanks to the Undertaker.
Undertaker & Batista vs. Finlay & Mr. Kennedy.
It seems they're reluctant to pull the trigger and turn
Batista full heel. He & Taker swapped blind tags throughout
the match. When the heels had the upper hand, Batista was
the face in peril. Hornswoggle never got involved at all.
Batista had the last blind tag after a chokeslam by Undertaker
to Kennedy. As Taker is busy with Finlay, Batista finishes
off "Mr. Money in the Bank" with the Batista Bomb.
Winners: Undertaker & Batista.
