Chris Benoit vs. Finlay [United States Championship
Match] They treated this like a big deal, such that
they made Tony Chimel wait until both competitors were in
the ring before finishing his introductions. Good opener,
creating a tough act to follow for the rest of the night.
Late in the match, Finlay went to get the Little Bastard,
but the leprechaun couldn't come out from under the ring.
Something kept pulling him back. Frustrated, Finlay went back
to the task at hand. Benoit hit the rolling Germans, but misfired
on the Air Benoit (as JBL called it) headbutt. Finlay was
back in control, but then the Boogeyman's music hit. The red
smoke billowed out from under the ring. Little Bastard finally
came out, with Boogeyman right behind him. Finlay was spooked
and distracted long enough for Benoit to schoolboy him for
the pinfall and retain the US title. Winner: Chris Benoit.Post-match,
Boogey tried to leave with Little Bastard, then decided to
let the leprechaun go. Little Bastard didn't want to go back
under the ring, which Cole & JBL both sympathized with.
Finally, Finlay forced him under the ring.
Brian Kendrick & Paul London (w/Ashley) vs. Deuce
& Domino (w/Cherry). Just for the record, Deuce,
the son of Superfly Jimmy Snuka, looks more like Jon "Bowzer"
Bauman from Sha-Na-Na than his dad. Domino? A poor man's Danny
Zucco. JBL made all sorts of jokes, and misidentified Cherry
as "Sandy". Olivia Newton-John would be so embarassed.
The champs took control early, but the tide turned on a double
team move by the newcomers, and from there, they got a ton
of heat on London. Despite a hot tag to Kendrick, the champs
couldn't get back in the driver's seat. Deuce finished off
Kendrick with a boot to the face and Domino collected the
pinfall.Winners: Deuce & Domino.
The "Ancient Order of Royal Houstonians", a knockoff
of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, gives hometown star King
Booker the key to the city of Houston. Booker cut a promo
and mentioned fellow natives Walter Cronkite, Roger Clemens,
& Patrick Swayze while deriding his constituents. All
Sharmell said was, "All Hail King Booker!" way too
much. Kane came out and disrupted the proceedings, and even
JBL admitted Booker illegally eliminated Kane in the Royal
Rumble, the 2nd year in a row there was an illegal elimination
(Shane McMahon did a run-in on Shawn Michaels last year).
Kane destroyed the rent-a-jobbers dressed as "city officials",
and chased Booker out.
Mr. Kennedy vs. Vito Total squash designed
to terminate Vito's current gimmick. Kennedy illustrated this
point by ripping the red dress off the newly crowned Deep
South Wrestling champ (not acknowledged as such by JBL or
Cole, no surprise there) before finishing him off with a Green
Bay Plunge. Winner: Mr. Kennedy. Kennedy continued to beat
down Vito post-match, including choking Vito with the dress.
I'm surprised ref Charles Robinson didn't go so far as to
overturn the decision.
Ashley vs. Kristal vs. Jillia .JBL is hosting
for once. Before bringing the girls out, he said JR did look
stupid in a cowboy hat, but he looks good. He's back to being
the pompous, self-serving clown we've come to loathe. I hate
to break it to these girls, but boots & bikinis do not
mix very well. Kristal wore a leopard print two-piece. Ashley
went for red, with candy stripes, and that includes the socks
under her boots. Jillian? She opted for a Wrestlemania 23
t-shirt and shorts. Acting as if this was beneath her, Jillian
decided to be Molly Holly for a night and tried to sing. After
the worst Britney Spears karaoke impression known to man,
JBL took the mic away. The fans made their decision......Winner:
Ashley.
Mike Mizanin vs. Matt Hardy The last time
these two were matched, Hardy was feuding with Gregory Helms,
and the cruiser champ cost Hardy the match. Now, Matt is still
stuck in a feud with MNM's Joey Mercury, and, you guessed
it, Mercury stuck his nose where it didn't belong. As Miz
had ref Chris Kay distracted, Mercury ran in and hit Matt
in the jaw with the noseguard. Miz had to drag the "dead
weight" to the center of the ring and hit a sloppy Mizard
of Oz neckbreaker to gain the pin. I just don't get it. It's
basically the Helms situation all over again. Winner: Mike
Mizanin.
Batista comes out to a deafening pop, and after acknowledging
Undertaker winning the Rumble, and the 14-0 record at Mania,
he calls out the Deadman. What he gets instead is John Cena,
the WWE champ and 1/2 of the World tag team champs. Cena wants
the same thing. Undertaker finally comes out and just glares
at both men. Shawn Michaels appears, and he too is looking
for answers. Undertaker's silence speaks volumes. Unfortunately,
Chairman Wackjob, Vince McMahon, shows up to spoil the party.
Inasmuch as HBK called for a match vs. Undertaker with the
title shot on the line, Chairman Wackjob "goes one better"
and puts the new Raw tag champs up against Batista & Undertaker
at No Way Out on 2/18. That ends the show. |
