Tonight's program begins with Teddy Long. For the benefit
of those who missed last week's Best of 2006 show, Teddy announces
the "Beat the Clock Sprint", the winner of which
will face World champ Batista at the Royal Rumble on Jan.
28. Batista comes out and cuts a short promo, claiming he
loves this idea. Long then introduces the first man in the
competition----Kane.
Kane vs. Chavo Guerrero. Chavo comes out
with a great deal of trepidation. You would too if your opponent
was the Big Red Machine. JBL & Cole stress, as Long mentioned
in his promo, that the matches are randomly put together.
They also flub and claim that "Beat the Clock" hasn't
happened before. It has on Raw to set up Elimination Chamber
matches at the last 2 New Year's Revolution PPV's. Batista
was in the first "Beat the Clock" tournament, and
had the best time. Anyway, both men are going for pinfalls
as soon as possible, because the quicker the match ends, the
harder it is for everyone else to beat the time. Chavo hit
the frogsplash, but that turned out to be a fatal mistake,
as Kane played possum and hit the chokeslam on Chavo for the
final pin. Winner: Kane in 7:53.
Brian Kendrick vs. Paul London. The tag team
champions are matched against each other in what was easily
one of the best matches on the card. Unfortunately, neither
man was able to register a pin in the alloted time. Post-match,
Ashley Massaro, the team's manager, came out and reunited
the champions as a cohesive unit. Winner: None. Time-limit
draw at 7:53.
John Bradshaw Layfield is in the ring and continues his diatribe
against Long for allowing the Inferno match between Kane &
MVP to take place at Armageddon. Montel Porter has "3rd
degree burns" on his back as a result of the match. Thought
his costume was flame-retardant. If it is, they did a heck
of a makeup job on his back. Porter comes out and claims Long
robbed him of his manhood, among other things. He takes a
page from Randy Orton's playbook, and says it's his destiny
to be World champion.
King Booker vs. Gregory Helms. (Non-title)
Michael Cole, forgetting about the Best of show from last
week, claimed that Helms' promo was last week, when it was
really on 12/22. Decent match, as these two are familiar with
each other dating back to their WCW days. Turning point in
the match saw Helms appear to set up for the Shining Wizard
after Booker missed a scissor kick, but Sharmell grabbed the
leg. The distraction proved costly for the cruiserweight champ,
as Booker hit his finisher, and lowered the time to beat.
Winner: King Booker at 6:24.
Ashley Massaro vs. Jillian Hall. Hall gets
the picture-in-picture treatment and cuts a heel promo on
Ashley. Her former boss, JBL, is channeling Jerry Lawler,
however, and drools over both women. Sloppy. Finish has Hall
going for a bodyslam, which Massaro converts into a cradle
for the pin.Winner: Ashley Massaro.
Jimmy Wang Yang vs. Tatanka. As before, each
man goes for pinfalls as soon as able, but the rapid pace
of the match doesn't hide the fact that Tatanka is still a
step or two slower, thanks to the passing of time, than Yang.
With time running down, Yang hits the moonsault, but the buzzer
sounds as ref Charles Robinson begins to count the pin. Angered,
Tatanka attacks Yang after the match and wipes him out with
the Trail's End. If anything, it started an undercard feud
for the road. Winner: None. Time-limit draw at 6:24.
Mr. Kennedy vs. Chris Benoit (non-title).
We are reminded that Benoit beat Kennedy to regain the US
title back in October, so Kennedy is doubly motivated by revenge.
However, Cole & JBL question whether or not Kennedy has
anything left after the Last Ride match at Armageddon. He
definitely does. He endures 8 German suplexes by Benoit, who
then misses the Air Canada headbutt. Kennedy removes a corner
turnbuckle pad behind the back of ref Nick Patrick. A short
time later, he whips Benoit face-first (though Benoit lifted
his head in time) into the exposed steel. Kennedy falls on
Benoit for the win.Winner: Mr. Kennedy at 5:07. |
