August 16:
Cueto Cup Semi-Finals:
Prince Puma vs. Fenix.
Melissa Santos blew a kiss to her man as he entered the arena. As Matt Striker helpfully notes, these two met once before, with Puma winning. Hot opener, very, very even. And, then, Marty Martinez showed up to hassle Melissa. Fenix switched gears and hit an Asai moonsault off the top on Martinez. Why security couldn't get rid of the Moth fast enough, I don't know. What I do know is that Puma took advantage of the distraction, and ultimately hit the 630 to advance to the finals.
Winner: Prince Puma.
Pentagon Dark vs. Mil Muertes (w/Catrina).
Earlier in the show, Catrina confronted Cage about his gauntlet. Pre-match, Cage ambushed Muertes as he was working out. That may not bode so well for Pentagon, since Jeremiah Crane had tried weakening Muertes, only for that to ultimately backfire. Package piledriver blocked, so Pentagon tries something different, a Coup de Grace off the top to advance.
Winner: Pentagon Dark.
Dario Cueto calls Rey Mysterio, Jr. & Johnny Mundo out for a face-to-face. Now, they're starting to use more WWE elements, considering that is where most people remember these two from. Predictably, Mundo's hired security, hired for him by Ben Cooke, no doubt, fails him, and we have a pull-apart brawl that empties the locker room, setting the stage ror the final chapter of the season, Ultima Lucha Tres.
Other stuff: Joey Ryan drops a dime on Veneno to Cueto, setting up a mask vs mask match with Sexy Star......
August 23:
1. Veneno vs. Sexy Star.
Not much to this. Cueto had referenced Sexy's problems with spiders. Ryan, however, couldn't wait, and once Veneno was draped on the middle rope, Ryan came out and unmasked him, exposing Cortez Castro (Officer Ricky Reyes). Castro gave chase, and was counted out, or was Sexy DQ'd again?
Result: No Contest.
2. Cueto Cup finals: Prince Puma vs. Pentagon Dark.
Vampiro, calling the match at ringside, has to have mixed emotions. His former student, Pentagon, is up against his new one, Puma. Another match of the year candidate, except that this was recorded last year. Much has happened since. Anyway, the two exchange Mexican Destroyers for near falls, and the crowd is going batshizzle insane. However, it is Puma that wins the tournament with the 630. Didn't see that coming.
Winner: Prince Puma.
Cueto presents Puma with the cup, then hustles him off, so we can get to the title match.
3. LU title: Johnny Mundo vs. Rey Mysterio, Jr..
No interference is permitted on either side, which, in an earlier segment, didn't make Mundo or Cooke very happy. We've seen better from these two back in WWE as far back as 2011. Unfortunately, some idiot decided we needed a ref bump, so Marty Elias takes a siesta. Mundo decides to take the short road.
Enter Dominic, Rey's son, with a receipt, drawing security to chase the kid out of the Temple. Rey rallies, as Dom has given him a 2nd chance, but after a 619 and a springboard frog splash, Cueto pulls Elias out of the ring, then hits Mysterio. Cueto ends up eating a 619, but Mundo has the last word with a belt shot to retain.
Winner: Johnny Mundo.
That means Mundo vs. Puma is next, and we can look forward to the following during Ultima Lucha Tres:
Cortez Castro vs. Joey Ryan.
Rey Mysterio vs. Matanza Cueto.
Fenix vs. Marty Martinez.
Trios title match.
More Gift of the Gods qualifiers.
Cage vs. Muertes.
